Syrup of Violets for Coughs & Sore Throats

Sweet violets Barefoot HerbsSweet Violets are a welcome sight when they come into full bloom.  Although they flower all year, the vibrant carpet of purple when they flower en masse, is only in Spring.  The flowers and root are used, and you do need patience to pick the flowers.  Take a couple of hours off from your busy day and make the task a welcome relaxing time rather than another chore.

 

 

 

 

 

Soothing Violet Cough Syrup

Sweet Violets are excellent for soothing phlegmy coughs and have the added benefit of being safe for children over 2 years old. It is also calming which makes it an even better medicine for sick children (or adults). Dosage is 2tsp twice a day for adults, and 1 tsp twice a day for children between the ages of 2 - 6

Materials

  • 1 Cup Sweet violet flowers
  • 1 Litre Boiling water
  • Sugar or honey

Instructions

  • Pour the boiling water over the flowers and leave to infuse for 24 hours
  • Strain and discard the flowers
  • Measure remaining liquid and add an equal amount of sugar or honey
  • Simmer until it is a syrupy consistency
  • Pour into clean, sterlised bottles
  • Label clearly
  • Lasts for up to 6 months
