Calendula Skin Salve

This is a fabulous skin salve to keep in your first aid box.  Use it on rashes, bites, cuts, sores and eczema

When I make creams and lotions I generally use an oil as the base.  However, I prefer to use an emulsifying ointment in this salve as i find it makes a better protective seal on the skin. If you can’t find emulsifying ointment you can use vaseline.

300ml boiling water

1 Tablespoon dried calendula flowers (or 3 Tbsp. fresh flowers)

60ml emulsifying ointment (or vaseline)

1 Tbsp glycerine

1 tsp honey

Pour the boiling water over the herb.  Cover and leave until cool.

Strain and keep the water infusion.

Put the emulsifying ointment, glycerine and honey in a bowl over a pot of simmering water and stir until melted

Remove from heat and add 150ml of the calendula infusion.  Stir well until cooled.  It will reach a consistency of thick cream. Pour into a small glass jar.

Pot Marigold – (Calendula officinalis)
