Yes, I know you can use cinnamon year round, but that gorgeous Christmasy smell gets me singing Jingle Bells every time I open the jar. It is used in so many things, it really is worth keeping some on hand. Several breads, biscuits and cakes use cinnamon, but it is fabulous in savoury meals too. My favourite is Butternut Tagine which is a great way to use your butternut crop. And let’s not forget about the winter beverages – Cinnamon is an essential ingredient of gluwein and mulled ale.
Cinnamon is a bug deterrent for clothing and bedding, although personally I would prefer not to smell like Christmas.
As a medicine it helps prevent nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Tests have shown that as little as ½ tsp per day has a significant effect on blood sugar levels, making it a useful medicine for diabetics. Simply make a tisane with ½ tsp cinnamon powder and 1 cup of boiling water. Leave it to stand for 10 minutes or so and then drink it
